Volunteer Program and Harvesting Hakurei Turnips and Roselle Pods

October 17th, 2024

If you’re curious and want to learn more about the varieties we grow and harvest on the farm, we recommend joining our Farm Volunteer Program! We have opportunities on Tuesday and Thursday mornings during our harvesting time as well as on Sundays for other farm tasks like weeding, planting, etc. To create a mutually beneficial situation for the volunteers and the farm, we ask for a commitment of 2 hours per week. If you’re interested in volunteering with us, please send us an email at HarvestGreen@Agmenity.com

Hakurei turnips are back in season! Hakureis, often called “salad turnips” have a crisp yet tender texture and a distinctive sweet flavor. They can be enjoyed raw, pickled, or cooked. Our new favorite way to enjoy this root veggie is to halve (or quarter) them, roast with olive oil until soft, then toss them with a mixture of peanut butter, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and honey. They’re also a really delicious addition to salads and slaws if you’re still craving lighter fare. Make sure to pick up a bunch at the Farm Stand this Saturday!

Have you had a chance to try our roselle pods at the Farm Stand yet? As the daylight hours grow shorter in the fall, our roselle plants begin to bloom. As the blooms fade, they form these beautiful ruby red pods (below). The red portion, called the calyx, has a tart cranberry-like flavor. It can be dried to make hibiscus tea or cooked to make syrups, jams, or chutneys. We recommend trying this roselle apple compote or this roselle hibiscus tea
