Transplanting Fall Crops
September 5th, 2024
Remember the first round of fall crops we started in the greenhouse in August? We’re transplanting some in the field this week! We started with our tried and true favorite, Napa cabbage. Not only does Napa cabbage tolerate the heat of late summer and early fall, it grows fairly quickly. This variety is called Bilko and it produces heads that are about 10-12-inches long with a mild, sweet flavor. Assuming the weather stays fairly normal for this time of the year, we expect to begin harvesting the first heads in October.
The fall crops we direct-seeded in the tunnel last week are coming in nicely! We’re especially happy with the germination on our carrots. In the past when we’ve sown them in the field during this time of year, the germination has been slower and not as even. This year, the overhead irrigation in the tunnels has helped ensure beautiful germination (below)! Though it will be a while before we’re able to harvest any carrots, you can expect to see quicker growing crops like arugula and radishes make their way to the Farm Stand in the next 2-3 weeks.
The next round of fall crops has already been sown in the greenhouse and is looking great! Since we intentionally decrease the footprint of the farm during the summer season, we are ramping up planting in anticipation for the cooler months ahead. This succession of fall crops was made up of collard greens, mustard greens, and Asian greens like tatsoi and komatsuna. Before you know it, these crops will be making their way to the Farm Stand and onto your plate. We’ll let you know as soon as we start harvesting the first fall crops!
