The Last Planting of the Summer Season and a Special Award for the Farm

August 10th, 2023

We planted eggplant and callaloo in the field this week. This is our very last summer planting before we start officially seeding for Fall! Callaloo (pictured below) will provide us with another great leafy green option until the temperatures begin to cool off. It is a type of edible amaranth that produces vibrant green leaves that can be enjoyed as you would spinach. To keep the bunnies away and ensure we have plenty for you to eat, we’ll be covering the callaloo with insect netting. We can’t wait to share some with you in a few weeks!

Speaking of summer leafy greens, have you tried any of our sweet potato greens? Due to the intense heat of our summers, we aren’t able to grow cool-season greens like lettuce, kale, or traditional spinach. Luckily, we have a delicious and versatile option in our abundant sweet potato greens! As our sweet potato tubers grow, they produce leafy green vegetation above the surface of the soil (pictured below). These greens can be enjoyed raw or cooked and have an earthy sweetness reminiscent of sweet potatoes. You can score some sweet potato greens to try at the Farm Stand on Saturday from 9am-noon or add them to your Veggie Share!

We are excited to share that the farm was awarded Best Community Amenity from the Texas Association of Builders! The judges were impressed by both the scope of the farm and the care taken to engage residents at a deeper level. Among the many things they loved were our events, Farm Club, the Farmers Market, and our Veggie Share Program. And, we think it’s safe to say that our goats and chickens might have had a tiny role in winning over the judges’ hearts. We are incredibly honored by this award and hope to see you on the farm soon!
