Sowing Seeds for Peppers and Flowers
January 30th, 2025
Our peppers are germinating in the greenhouse! This year, we are planting similar varieties to years past but tweaking the ratios. We’ll be planting a larger number of bell peppers since they were the most popular at the Farm Stand. We’ll also be trying out Thai red chilis since they were requested several times last year. Sweet peppers like Carmen and Jimmy Nardello will be returning in addition to spicy Black Magic jalapenos and Bastan poblanos. All of the plants are still very young but we’ll let you know as soon as we start transplanting them in the tunnels!
Our Mother’s Day flower bouquet activity at the Farmers Market is one of our most highly attended events aside from La Tomatina Padre. Though May might seem like it’s far away, the prep for our flower patch begins now! We are planting over 15 different varieties this year that will eventually make their way into some beautiful Mother’s Day bouquets. Since a lot of these flowers have lower germination rates and long days of maturity, an early start is necessary in order to have them blooming by May. We are looking forward to another great flower patch this year.
Though a lot of our crops in the field are still recovering from the freeze, we were able to harvest something new this week: spinach! Our spinach (above) was covered during the freeze and is doing really well. We were also able to harvest parsley and scallions this week so you’ll be able to find them at the Farm Stand this Saturday along with first-of-the-season spinach. A few of our leafy greens like collards and chard have been stripped of their frost damaged leaves (below) but should bounce back over the coming weeks.
