Sowing Seeds for Fall

August 15th, 2024

Our fall seeds arrived at the beginning of this week so we were able to start the first round of crops in the greenhouse! This will be the first of many successions of fall crops that we plant in anticipation of the seasonal transition. The varieties sown are those that have proven to be reliable in the past, especially during these incredibly warm days. In addition to sowing seeds in the greenhouse, we’ll also be direct-seeding in one of our tunnels. We’ll share more about that process soon! In the meantime, here’s what we planted: Black Magic Lacinato Kale, Napa Cabbage, Caraflex Cabbage, and three varieties of Swiss Chard.

Have you had a chance to try any of our Korean melons this summer? This is one of our favorite crops that is such a refreshing summertime treat. We are growing a new variety this year called “Golden Giant” that is a little larger and more oblong than the “Torpedo” variety we’ve grown in the past. Farmer Nathan has been juicing them recently which has quickly become a favorite of the farm team. An unexpected yet incredibly delicious way to enjoy them is in pastry form. In this recipe, Korean melon is cooked down into a jam and paired with cream cheese as a filling for a pastry. Make sure to pick up some Korean melons at the Farm Stand on Saturday and let us know your favorite way to eat it!
