Setting Goals and Planting the First Round of Tomatoes

January 9th, 2025

One of our big goals this year is to engage more of our community with the farm. We plan to do this through our programming, Farm Club, the Farmers Market, and our Vegetable Share Program. As we build our spring programming schedule, our plan is to bring back popular events like La Tomatina Padre and Mother’s Day Bouquets at the Farmers Market in addition to some brand new offerings. We can’t wait to share more with you very soon. In the meantime, we hope to see you at the Farm Stand and Farmers Market every Saturday from 9am-1pm!

The first round of tomatoes has been seeded in the greenhouse! The tomato seedlings are growing nicely despite the recent cold snap. This round of tomatoes will be planted in our caterpillar tunnels and we’ll be seeding another separate succession soon for the field. We are experimenting with an earlier planting date this year to extend tomato season as long as possible. Here are the varieties we’ve planted so far: Sungold, Cherry Bomb, New Girl, and Caiman.

Kohlrabi has made its way back into season at the Farm Stand! A member of the brassica family along with winter favorites like broccoli and kale, kohlrabi (below) has a sweet and somewhat peppery flavor that is a cross between a broccoli stem and a turnip. The texture of the flesh is crunchy and can be eaten raw in salads or slaws. We love chopping it into sticks or wedges and pairing it with homemade hummus! Kohlrabi can also be roasted and stir-fried which intensifies its sweetness.
