Seasonal Gardening Series on Tuesday, October 15th

October 10th, 2024

Our Seasonal Gardening Series: Cool Season Edition is coming up on Tuesday, October 15th from 6-7pm! This class is perfect for both beginner and seasoned gardeners alike. Attendees will learn which crops are best to plant during the cooler months, including our favorites like Asian greens, carrots, and broccoli. And, you’ll learn how to ensure steady harvests throughout the season with succession planting. Once the class is over you’ll take home a transplant to start your own garden in addition to gardening resources to help you throughout the season. Space is limited so we highly recommend securing your spot here

Komatsuna is in season at the Farm Stand! This Asian leafy green (above) is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed either cooked or raw. It has a fresh and mildly sweet cabbage flavor with tender leaves and crunchy stems. If you’ve never tried it, we recommend starting with a simple sauté and flavoring it with garlic, salt, and pepper. Or, you can try some of our favorite ways to eat it! Farmer Bethany loves to sauté komatsuna with ground beef while Farmer Ky adds it to soup. Farmer Nathan enjoys braising komatsuna and tossing it with noodles. Make sure to pick some up on Saturday to try!

Remember the Napa cabbage that we transplanted at the beginning of September? If you look at the photo above, you’ll see what size they were when we planted them. The photo below shows how big the plants have gotten over the last month! These plants started in the greenhouse back in August and were among the very first fall crops to germinate. Now that they have been in the ground for a little over a month, some of the plants are just starting to form loose heads. As they progress, the heads will become tighter and will start to blanch as they are shielded from direct sunlight by the outer leaves. Once the heads are roughly 10-12 inches long, they’ll be ready for harvesting!
