Ordering Seeds for Fall and Harvesting Summer Herbs

August 8th, 2024

We just placed our first order of fall seeds! Here’s what we ordered: carrots, scallions, radishes, turnips, arugula, kale, chard, collards, Asian greens, mustard greens, and cabbage. This first round consists of varieties that are more heat tolerant as they will be growing during the transitional period from summer to fall. Once our seeds arrive, we will be planting some of them in the greenhouse within the next couple of weeks. We will also be starting some in one of our high tunnels since they are outfitted with overhead irrigation that will effectively keep our direct-seeded crops moist. We are super excited to see how they do and hope this will allow us to offer these crops earlier than in prior seasons when we did not have the convenience of a covered growing space.

During the intense heat of the summer months, we are limited in the variety of crops that we can grow. Enter our summer herbs, a great way to add flavorful variety to dishes and elevate your cooking experience! You can currently find three varieties of basil at the Farm Stand (Italian, Thai, and Holy) in addition to lemongrass, tarragon, oregano, and garlic chives. Holy basil tea is a farmer favorite due to its refreshing and uplifting flavor. We highly recommend picking up a bunch or two at the Farm Stand on Saturday so you can try it for yourself! If you’re curious about any of our herbs and how to cook with them, you can always ask us for suggestions at the Farm Stand.
