La Tomatina Padre this Saturday
June 13th, 2024
Calling all Harvest Green residents! You still have time to sign up for our annual La Tomatina Padre event happening THIS Saturday from 10am-noon on the farm! The festivities kick off at 10am with our signature tomato toss. After the last tomato has been thrown, you’ll be able to cool off on the waterslide or with a blast of water from a local fire truck. To keep your energy up, we’ll have light bites and drinks made with produce from the farm. If you plan on attending this resident-only event, please reach out to Lifestyle@HarvestGreenTexas.com for tickets.
Summer has arrived and with it the installation of shade cloths over each of our tunnels. The main goal with our tunnels is season extension. At this point in the year, we’re hoping they can help us extend spring crops into the summer season. In order to do that, we installed a shade cloth over each tunnel which will create a 30% reduction in light. This will aid in keeping the plants in the tunnel cooler and more productive. Since this is the first year we’ve been able to grow tomatoes in them, our hope is that we can extend their season a little longer into the month of July!
During the hot summer season, we intentionally reduce our footprint of the main field. This is due in part to the smaller number of varieties that will grow and thrive in the summer heat. Rather than allowing the un-planted rows to lay vacant, we plant them with beneficial cover crops. Our main summer cover crop this year is the cowpea (below). It grows well during the summer, blankets the soil, adds biomass, and fixes beneficial nitrogen to the soil. Plus, it doesn’t need a lot of water and maintenance once established! Our cowpeas will be left to grow throughout the summer until they are mowed under for fall bed preparations.
