June Tomato Events and New Summer Farmers Market Hours
June 1st, 2023
A new month brings new opportunities for you to experience the farm! On Sunday, June 11th from 6-7pm, you can join Farmer Nick for Flavors of the Farm: Summertime Edition. This cooking demo and tasting event will be a relaxing evening on the farm highlighting beloved summer veggies like tomatoes and cucumbers. You can sign up here for this public event.
Just a couple of days later on Tuesday, June 13th from 6-7pm, Farmer Nathan will be leading our Tuesday Tomato Talk. If you’re a tomato fan, this event is for you! Attendees will learn all about tomato biology, plant care and maintenance, and specifics on all of the varietals we’re growing this year. Plus, you’ll get to taste some tomato samples! You can find out more and sign up for this public event here.
This week, two summer veggies are making their return to the Farm Stand: eggplant and okra! We’re currently harvesting Orient Express (pictured above) and Ping Tung eggplants. These are both Asian varieties that are long and slender with thinner skin. Farmer Nathan recommends stir-frying sliced eggplant with some of our peppers and zucchini for a quick and simple veggie side. Or, you can add spices like cumin and coriander and enjoy it as a taco filling.
In addition to eggplant, we’re harvesting limited amounts of okra. We’re excited to share a new okra variety with you this summer: Okinawa Pink! This variety (pictured above on the left) yields magenta pods that are smooth and tender. We highly recommend roasting them in a hot oven until nice and crispy for an easier alternative to fried okra. You can get okra, eggplant, and all of our other delicious organic veggies at the Farm Stand this weekend or you can add them to your next Veggie Share. If you’re planning to pick them up during our Farmers Market on Saturday, please note that summer hours go into effect beginning this weekend: 9am-12pm.
