Harvesting Peppers and Sweet Potato Greens
July 18th, 2024
The caterpillar tunnel with our peppers is back up and running! We were able to rebuild it with pieces from our other tunnels before reinstalling the plastic film and the shade cloth. All of our sweet pepper varieties like Jimmy Nardello and Escamillo are growing in this tunnel. They are still producing beautiful and delicious peppers through the summer heat, albeit at a slower pace. We are really excited about the Sprinter variety which produces gorgeous red bell peppers (below). Make sure to stop by the Farm Stand this Saturday to try some!
Out in the field, our hot peppers are doing well post-hurricane! Our jalapenos, banana peppers, and aji rico peppers are producing well and continuing to yield abundant harvests. All of these varieties are great for pickling and making hot sauce and salsa. Or, you can add them to a batch of cucumber pico de gallo! Simply mix together diced cucumbers, onion, peppers, and cilantro and season with salt and lime juice.
The sweet potatoes growing in the field are really taking off so we’ve been harvesting their delicious leafy greens for the Farm Stand. As a sweet potato tuber grows, it produces leafy green vegetation above the surface of the soil. These greens can be enjoyed raw or cooked and have an earthy sweetness reminiscent of sweet potatoes. Try substituting them in place of spinach in some of your favorite recipes.
