Harvesting for Local Restaurants

August 1st, 2024

Did you know that many Houston-area restaurants source our organic produce for their menus? We highly recommend making a reservation with them soon! Here are a few of our consistent customers this season:

  • Andiron - Andiron draws on traditions from Texas and travels abroad to upend expectations of the wood-burning steakhouse. They have been ordering long beans, zucchini, and Italian peppers from us for their seasonal menu.

  • Ostia - Ostia is a neighborhood-centric joint with a menu reflective of Chef Travis McShane's approach to farm-to-table, rustic, and lighter Mediterranean fare with an underlying Italian tone. They frequently source Italian peppers, eggplant, and okra from us during the summer season.

  • Tiny Champions - Tiny Champions is a neighborhood joint in the East End cooking up a seasonal menu of delicious pizza, pasta, and veggie sides. They love to order sweet potato greens from us for their seasonal greens pizza along with Italian basil, eggplants, and peppers.

If you’re one of our Veggie Share members, you might have noticed the availability of eggs has decreased during the summer months. This is due to a drop in egg production from the summer heat. Just as the summer conditions can affect humans, chicken will decrease their egg laying in order to handle the stress more effectively. As always, we ensure they have plenty of cool water, shade, snacks, and access to as many dirt baths as they need. You can expect to see egg availability gradually increase as it cools down in the fall.

Have you had a chance to try some of our Malabar spinach yet? This leafy summer green (above) is a heat-tolerant tropical vining plant with succulent leaves. It is not a true spinach but gets its name from the fact that the leaves have a similar mild flavor. Both the leaves and shoots of Malabar spinach can be enjoyed raw or cooked. One of our Farm Stand patrons recommended pairing it with potatoes in a stir-fry. Here’s a recipe if you’d like to try it out this weekend!
