Fig Orchard Planting This Saturday!

March 21st, 2024

The weather looks great for our Fig Orchard Planting Day this Saturday, March 23rd! With your help, we’ll be able to plant 50 more trees in the orchard space. In addition to investing in the future of the community, this volunteer opportunity is a great way to gain planting knowledge and learn about how we’ll be maintaining the orchard. Kids are more than welcome to join the fun, provided they have parental supervision. If you’d like to join us, plan to arrive promptly at 9am so you don’t miss our welcome meeting and planting demo. And, don’t forget to sign up here so we can ensure we have plenty of tools and refreshments available!

It’s been a month since we planted tomatoes in our tunnel and we can’t believe how big they are! The tomatoes in the tunnel are trellised differently than those in the field using an overhead system of roller hooks and string. The roller hooks and string are suspended from the ceiling of the tunnel and the main stem of each tomato plant is gently wound around the string as it grows. This allows us to maximize the vertical growing space in the tunnel. Once the tomato plants reach the top of the tunnel, we’ll be using the lower and lean method to keep them growing, but we’ll share more on that later. For now, please enjoy these baby Valencia tomatoes!

The first wave of zucchini is almost ready for harvesting! We planted this succession of zucchini in one of our tunnels about a month ago which is much earlier than has ever been possible. This is largely due to the protection the tunnel provides from cold and excess moisture. We are incredibly excited to be able to offer you early spring zucchini soon! Make sure to keep an eye out for them next week at the Farm Stand.
