Fig Orchard Planting Day on March 23rd
March 7th, 2024
Remember the fig trees we planted in the Silo Field in November? We are excited to announce that we’ll be finishing the orchard space this month by planting 40 more trees! Come join us on Saturday, March 23rd from 9am-12pm for our Fig Orchard Planting Day. We’ll be planting some of the same varieties as last time along with new ones like LSU Gold and Banana. Light refreshments and all necessary tools will be provided. This event is open to the public and free of charge so we would love to see you there!. We request that you sign up here if you plan to attend so that we can plan accordingly.
We planted four beds in one of our tunnels with peppers last week! This is the earliest we’ve been able to plant peppers and we couldn’t be more excited. All of the varieties planted in the tunnel are sweet: Carmen, Escamillo, Jimmy Nardello, Cornitos, and Sprinter (a bell pepper). Our hope is that the tunnel will allow us to extend pepper season as it will keep them safe from excess moisture and we will be able to install a shade cloth for added protection once summer arrives.
Last week we transplanted all of our field tomatoes. This year we’re growing 3 rows in the field and 3 in the tunnel. Though we grew a whopping 9 rows of tomatoes last year, our goal for this year was to scale down in order to manage them better with pruning, trellising, and harvesting. As you can see in the photo below, all of our field tomatoes are planted in beds covered in weed fabric. This will cut down significantly on time spent weeding and will keep the soil warmer which will allow our plants to grow faster. Here are the varieties planted in the field: Granadero, Galahad, Bumblebee, Sunrise Bumblebee, and Clementine.
