Fall Crops Germinating in the Greenhouse
August 22nd, 2024
Remember the first round of fall crops we planted last week? Everything has started germinating despite the summer heat! One of our favorite early fall crops to sow is Napa cabbage. It tolerates the heat of late summer well and grows fairly quickly. As you can see in the photo below, our Napa cabbage has not only germinated but is already producing its first set of true leaves! We’ll be sharing more about this delicious crop over the next several weeks as we follow it from seed to harvest so stay tuned.
We mowed one of our sections of cowpea cover crop this week in anticipation for fall planting. The plant matter is left in place and allowed to break down in order to add organic matter back to the soil. Once it has broken down sufficiently, these beds (below) will be broadforked and prepared for the first round of fall transplanting. We hope you’re as excited for the seasonal transition as we are!
This week we are finishing up repairs on our tunnels in preparation for the upcoming season. We’ll be direct-seeding fall crops like arugula and radishes in at least one of our tunnels since they are outfitted with overhead irrigation that will keep our crops watered more evenly than in the field. The protection our tunnels provide will also allow us to begin direct-seeding much earlier than we’ve been able to do in the past. That means you’ll be able to enjoy certain fall crops a bit earlier this year!
