Direct-Seeding for Fall in the Tunnel
August 29th, 2024
Back at the beginning of March, we planted one of our tunnels entirely with sweet pepper varieties. It was the earliest we had ever been able to transplant our peppers due to the protection and warmth the tunnel provided. Initially, our goal was to extend their season as long as possible throughout spring and summer, and even into fall. We are happy to report that our sweet pepper plants are still going strong. As you can see in the photo above, some of them are as tall as Farmer Ky! Our plants are still producing a lot of peppers, though they are ripening at a much slower rate which is typical during the summer heat. We hope you’ve been enjoying all of our sweet pepper varieties this year!
Remember the tunnels we were repairing last week for fall planting? We direct-seeded several varieties for fall in one of them this week! Direct-seeding is a method we employ with certain crops that either don’t transplant well or that we need to sow thickly (like baby greens). The protection provided by the tunnel along with the overhead irrigation system should help these crops thrive and allow us to offer them to you a little earlier this year. As you can see in the photo below, the arugula is already germinating! Here’s what we planted: radishes, carrots, scallions, arugula, and a baby kale mix.
We are putting the finishing touches on our fall/winter event calendar. Though we’ll be sharing more with you soon, we highly encourage you to mark Saturday, October 5th on your calendar for our Fall Kickoff at the Farmers Market! Our annual celebration of the arrival of the fall season will include a pumpkin patch, a bounce house, and photo op with our tractor. We look forward to sharing more with you soon!
