Checking Sugar Snaps and Harvesting Gai Lan

December 21st, 2023

We spotted the first baby peas (below) on our sugar snaps growing in the caterpillar tunnel! This round of peas is the first we have grown in the tunnel. We’ve been really pleased with how well they have grown and are excited to share the first harvest with you! Since the plants are just beginning to flower, we expect to have the first harvest available at the market on either December 30th or January 6th. We’ll make sure to let you know!

We are harvesting a new crop for you this week: Gai Lan. Sometimes called Chinese broccoli or Chinese kale, Gai Lan (below) is a member of the Brassica family. It produces edible leaves, stems, and florets. The leaves have an earthy flavor while the stems and florets are more sweet. It’s great for stir-frying or adding to soups and stews. A popular preparation is to pair it with oyster sauce for a delicious side dish. Make sure to pop by the Farm Stand this weekend so you can pick up a bunch to try!

The remaining two caterpillar tunnels have been constructed and are currently in the process of being prepped for planting! We’ll be planting one of the new tunnels with quick-growing cool season crops by the end of the week. The other will most likely stay vacant in anticipation of tomato and pepper planting next year. Our goal is to eventually dedicate one of these tunnels to peppers and tomatoes while the other will be planted with spring peas and early cucumbers. We are excited at all of the possibilities that lie ahead and can’t wait to share more details soon.
