Celebrating Tomato Season with La Tomatina Padre and Tuesday Tomato Talk

We’re gearing up for La Tomatina Padre, our annual celebration of tomato season! This resident-only event takes place on Saturday, June 15th from 10am-noon on the farm. Festivities will kick off with our signature tomato toss which features newly designed t-shirts this year to help the kiddos stay on target. Once you’ve had your fill of pelting tomatoes, you can cool off in the water slide or grab some light bites and drinks. The tomato celebration continues with our 3rd annual Tuesday Tomato Talk and Tasting! Join Farmer Nathan on Tuesday, June 11th from 6-7pm to explore the fan favorite fruit of the farm. We will discuss the critical growing window for tomatoes in the Houston region, tried and true varieties, and the process of care from up-potting, trellising, and pruning plants. Attendees will get to explore a living example of tomatoes growing on the farm and taste each variety. This is a ticketed event that takes place on the farm and is open to the public. Summer crops are making their way to the Farm Stand! Deep summer brings extreme heat which calls for reliable, heat-tolerant varieties to carry us through to fall. Summer planting begins well before the season arrives in order to help establish the first succession of crops. Among these heat-tolerant varieties are bitter melon (above), long beans (below), okra, amaranth, and striped Armenian cucumbers. We’re already harvesting bitter melon, okra, and long beans which can all be found at the Farm Stand.
