Bidding Daphne Farewell and Welcoming Courtney to the Farm Team
June 29th, 2023
Join us in wishing Farmer Daphne a very fond farewell! We’ve enjoyed working alongside Daphne over the last year and will miss being greeted by her infectious smile. Throughout the month of July, Daphne will be at the farmers market every Saturday before she heads off to a new adventure on her own farm. Make sure to pop by the market to wish her well!
Daphne’s spot on the farm team will be filled by our newest Farm Educator, Courtney! A native Houstonian, Courtney graduated from Texas State University in 2022 with a degree in agriculture. During her time in school, she was able to help with the initial build and planting of the Student Sustainable Farm in addition to working with a local hydroponic farm. Courtney has been drawn to agriculture from an early age because she sees farming as vitally important. And, she’s always wanted a job that allowed her to work outside and see the literal fruits of her labor. Make sure to say hello if you see her around the farm!
We are excited to be able to offer you a new crop for the summer: winged beans! Introduced to us last summer by one of our Farm Club members, winged beans are a tropical legume that produce edible pods and leaves (pictured above). They’re a pole bean which means they have a climbing habit that requires the support of a trellis. As you can see in the photo below, some of the vines are already taller than Farmer Nathan! Our winged beans will be flowering soon which means we should have the first harvest for you in the next few weeks.
