A New Team Member & Harvesting Hakurei
Village Farm Team,
We’re excited to introduce our newest Farm Educator Nathan Cross! Originally from Minnesota, Nathan comes to us from New Hampshire. He just finished up his Masters in environmental education and has been involved with the field for about four years. His original background is in zoology so he loves animals, especially birds and bird watching. Nathan is looking forward to experiencing our year-round growing season and working with the Harvest Green community to begin expanding our educational outreach.
We harvested the first of our Hakurei turnips last week! Unlike most other turnip varieties, Hakurei do not have to be cooked prior to eating and can be enjoyed raw. They are crisp with a delicate flavor so they make the perfect addition to a salad, used as a crudité with dip, or as a quick-pickle. Feel like cooking and want something warm? Add Hakurei to soups, stews, or roast them in a pan before tossing them with a miso or honey-based glaze. You’ll be able to find these delicious roots at the veggie wagon this Saturday.
Our broccoli crop is officially done for the season as the temperatures have warmed considerably. But, as we bid farewell to broccoli for now, we will soon welcome crops like tomatoes! The rows adjacent to our tomatoes were planted with sweet and hot peppers this week. The cucumbers and squash that were planted last week are coming along nicely and we should start seeing the first blooms in the next couple of weeks. Make sure to get your fill of cabbage, kale, and chard for now because these will make their way out of season in the coming weeks!
Please note the veggie wagon is still open on Saturdays from 8-12 but with more stringent sanitary protocols in place.
Happy Harvesting, The Agmenity Farm Team
