Goats on Leashes & Weeding Like a Boss

The goats were moved into their shiny, new pen this week to free up the space for the future chickens. Remember how you had to train your dog when he or she was a puppy? That’s what’s happening with the goats! Each goat is being leash-trained in addition to being taught not to jump or nibble and to respond to basic commands like ‘come’ and ‘stay’. The training will allow the goats to be able to spend more time outside the pen grazing or as we like to call it “weed control”. Though most people think goats will eat any and everything, they actually prefer to graze! In addition to grazing our ladies have really taken a liking to the chard grown on the farm.

On Wednesday evening we hosted a seeding event to prepare for summer transplanting. Community members had the opportunity to help us plant a variety of seeds in our propagation trays. By the end of the evening a whopping 45 trays were seeded with varieties of cucumber, basil, eggplant, and tomatillo! Starting seeds in our greenhouse allows us to provide a more stable growing environment as they germinate and begin to sprout. Once planted, the seeds will be carefully watered to ensure they don’t dry out or fail to develop.

Have you had a chance to see the new mural being painted on the farm shed? Visible from Harlem Road, the mural is a collaboration between Harvest Green residents, the KCAM Contemporary Art Museum Fort Bend, Travis High School, and Youth in Philanthropy. Mark Deleon, the KCAM artist-in-residence, sketched out a beautiful farm-themed design on the shed which was then filled in by about 25 kids this past weekend. He’s been working hard on putting the finishing touches on the mural this week so make sure you check it out!

The team has been weeding like a boss lately, especially on the South Farm! Though it seems mundane, weeding and mowing is a large part of the day-to-day operations on the farm. With the current mild temperatures and rainfall, the weeds are growing like, well, weeds! Once the temperatures rise in the summer, weed growth will fall off but for now it’s an integral part of farm maintenance.
