FINAL SWEET POTATO HARVEST

This week farmers completed the remaining sweet potato harvest and hung bags to allow the produce to cure. Burlap bags are used because they allow for ample air flow while holding a lot of weight since a bag can weigh up to 70 lbs. The sweet potato bags from last weekend's harvest are now hanging to cure in our ventilated shipping container.

Keenan went through the beds checking on the progress of each plant. He had noticed that the Brassica family (broccoli, cabbage, etc.) was not emerging from the soil. After looking into the situation further, he found that the clay crust on the soil surface was preventing these fragile seedlings from breaking through. Higher organic matter in the soil will resolve this in the long run. To solve this problem in the nearer future, the crops must be replanted. There are some small things that can help, such as planting larger seeds, like radishes. In the upcoming week, we will be preparing for the Harvest Festival by beautifying the farm as well as opening the bee hive, weeding, and mowing.
